“Why are you here?” asked the young man.

“I could ask you the same question, Radley,” Alistair replied to him.

“Look, she’s asleep upstairs and I don’t want her waking up to find me gone. It’s best that you get going,” Radley said.

“Not before we clarify some things.”

Radley looked down and didn’t meet the older man’s eyes.

“The Council doesn’t seem to have knowledge of your involvement with her yet, but it’s only a matter of time before they do,” Alistair said.

“You’ve been watching me,” Radley stated.

“Yes, and only because it is my job to watch over you. I took you in, remember? You could have finished what they had sent you to do, but you chose not to. Tell me why.”

“I know what I’m supposed to do. Haven’t I been doing my job all this time? I just need a little more time with her. That’s all.” Radley looked at the old man.

“Her time ends next week. Either you do what you were sent to do or we assign someone else to her,” Alistair said as he looked up at the sky.

“Please, Alistair. I just need more time. She’s …” Radley did not finish his sentence.

“I know, my boy. I know.” The old man smiled sadly.

“Please don’t tell the Council anything,” Radley pleaded.

“What do you think is going to happen? Everything has been set into motion. There’s nothing either one of us can do to stop what has been decided on.” Alistair shifted his walking stick.

“You know I can’t just sit back and watch. Now that you know, please, help me find a way. I can’t lose her, Alistair.”

Radley sat on the steps leading to Amber’s building and ran his hands through his hair. He looked up at Alistair and wiped his glistening eyes.

“I beg you, Alistair. Please help me find a way.”

The old man sat down next to Radley and patted his back.
